Shooting an engagement is just as important for the couple as it is for the photographer. During the shoot, you get to really know the couple’s likes and dislike as well as how they react to certain ideas you may have. During my years capturing couples I’ve always noticed the first 15 mins is the most challenging, firstly the couple are new to the camera being in their face and you are worried about how the couple are going to react to your ideas and as well as you trying to get them to make a real loving connection.
For the first 15 minutes of my shoots, I keep the couple interacting with each other, walking, talking and relaxing, having fun. Once they have warmed up and I’ve got to know them much better I can start adding direction. I keep my shots relaxed, never formal, more creative and casual. I find the best shots are always the in between shots of direction and their natural movements.
I love the engagement shoot process, you know the couple are going to get some fantastic natural shots that they will cherish and are likely to show all their friends and family. Plus I always get the favourite shot printed and framed and there is no greater feeling than seeing a great couple happy and ready to hung on the wall!
